In July 2011, “Nature Reviews Drug Discovery,” a sub-publication of “Nature,” published a review article entitled “Novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of heart failure,” co-authored by Professor Juan Tamargo of Universidad Complutense and Professor José López-Sendón of Department of Cardiology, Hospital Universitario La Paz. In this review, the mechanism, efficacy and application prospects for some new targeted therapies in the treatment of heart failure are analyzed, including ventricular remodeling, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation, and Ca²⁺ circulation promotion. The Ca²⁺ circulation discussion introduces neuregulin-1 (NRG1), a growth factor expressed in cardiac endothelial cells that can stimulate cardiac activity. It also plays an important role in the development of the heart and in maintaining normal heart structures and functions.
